Background – During the early 3060s James Cobb, Khan of Clan Hell’s Horses commissioned his Scientist caste to create a new strike vehicle in order to bolster their ranks in the Inner Sphere and backfill units in the home-worlds. His designers went in search of previous designs such as cached SLDF Whirlwinds and comparable ones taken as Isorla such as the CCAF Regulator. Little did they know that almost all Brian Cached Whirlwinds had already been seized by the Fortunate Conspiracy aka The Society who presently built them as their primary strike vehicle.

Horse Scientists acquainted with the conspiracy lifted the designs and made some modifications to what would eventually become the Bellona. Khan Cobb was incredibly pleased with the fast turnaround of a new very effective tank within two years. He lavished unusual praise on his Scientists for their diligent work. Unfortunately this would later backfire as conspirators within the Horses would instigate conflict and almost bring ruin to the Clan and death to its Khan during the Jihad and Sundering.

Weapons and Equipment - As the Homeworlds Hell’s Horses grew closer to the Coyotes the Society cells within each began incorporating the Coyote’s ATM system into shared designs impressed by its versatility, range, and potential upgrades. After testing a twelve-shot version in the first four prototypes they settled on a single nine shot variant for the fifth prototype, codenamed Victrix. This lighter weapon allowed for a smaller turret and less machinery freeing up space for other weapons at a minor sacrifice in throw-weight. It is given three tons of ammunition typically a 2/1 mix of Standard and HE ATMs. With that space engineers upgraded the engine to the same one used in the Bellona allowing them to utilize Horse and Coyote industry for the most expensive components.

On their watery home planet of Fortuna (formerly FASA) the Conspiracy makes the actual chassis armoring it with 8.5 tons of their own ferro-fibrous after installing the engine and weapon systems. Due to their oceanic home-world and recognized strike potential from the sea the Victrix is built with a floatation hull allowing it to power down to avoid thermal sensors and survive hits to its lift equipment over water.

There is also a reusable vehicular drop-chute as the design is principally inserted in theater via Fury overflight onto water. With little excess cargo capacity on their small dropships more support equipment has to be carried onboard its strike element. The five-minute pause to stow the chute after drop gives the command variant time to locate their subordinates and radio in a rally point. With a max speed approaching 151 kph from its DAC 170 fusion engine the other elements of a formation can rapidly rally toward the last dropped unit and be ready to depart by the time they finish stowing their own chute.

The five-ton infantry bay is typically occupied by a squad of mechanized hover infantry utilizing a “skimmer” armed with a heavy automatic grenade launcher while other troops carry Clan Pulse Laser rifles.

Variants:
Command - Five tons of communication equipment replaces the infantry bay allowing for satellite uplink (particularly weather), minor EWAR capability, and remote sensor operation.

High Speed Minelayer - Three maritime minelayers attached to each of its sides and two more tons of ammo for its ATM-9 replace the infantry bay. This variant can be very disruptive to harbors or make crossing rivers incredibly hazardous for enemy battlemechs.
