Background – The Word of Blake Militia units sent to punish Archon-Princess Katherine Steiner-Davion for her withdrawal from the Star League were on the receiving end of too many missiles from the TSDF during the First Battle of Tharkad in 3067. Precentor Martial Cameron St Jamais, humiliated by the defeat, mobilized Terran and the League’s industries to create weapons that could protect what would become the Sol Protectorate. They were also to be easily deployable from the Triumphs already modified by the Word of Blake for super-heavy vehicles in development, most of which were scrapped to free up assets for the war effect.

Bluefin Technologies was the first to respond and had seen brisk business with its Baleena class of super-heavy submersible in the 3060s. They delivered a design that while as expensive as a light dropship could eliminate one dropships at little danger to itself.

Concealed by the vastness of the ocean and utilizing the stealth coatings then in development by the Bolla program the Cetus can deliver a pair of Cruise Missiles up to 25 kilometers away with only slightly more than a minute of warning. By the time they impacted their targets, typically dropships, other naval vessels, or large fixed installations, the crew could dive, concealing themselves from counterattack, and stay underwater for a moderate amount of time until they could rendezvous at a resupply point.

Although incapable of protecting itself the difficulty in interdicting these vessels with anything other than your own hunter-killers and their limited ammunition load ensured that many of them escaped Coalition forces. Occupying forces instead were tasked with interdicting their logistics and did so using much lighter cutters, hover tanks, or helicopters. However, many formerly occupied worlds are still threatened by Blakist remnant forces using these machines as transports to bases concealed on remote islands, often near a world’s poles, that escaped detection.

Stonefish Heavy Patrol Boat
Mass: 70 tons
Movement Type: Hydrofoil
Power Plant: Leenex 145 Fusion
Cruising Speed: 75.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 118.8 kph
Armor: Starshield-A Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
     1 Large Pulse Laser
     1 SRM 6
     2 Anti-Missile System
     1 LRM 10
Manufacturer: Caiman Watercraft
     Primary Factory: Carver V
Communication System: Stonefish OceanEar
Targeting & Tracking System: Stonefish Pounce
Introduction Year: 3060
Cost: 4,046,789 C-bills
Battle Value: 1,342

History – The third creation of Caiman Watercraft, and first after their buyout by Vicore Industries, of Carver V the Stonefish occupies the need for a transportable high endurance medium firepower coastal patrol boat. Utilizing the same Leenox 145 Fusion engine as the venerable J. Edgar hovercraft provided by Aldis Industries of Terra this seventy-ton boat proved itself during the Jihad as a fierce combatant craft supporting Sol Protectorate Milita forces in each of its theaters.

Weapons and Equipment – The Stonefish was initially designed to utilize the standard Manticore turret of a Parti-kill PPC, Sure-shot Mk VI, and Far Shot Medium and this remains its most popular variant. However, the nature of naval combat and the Stonefish’s 118 km/h speed meant that the less popular (for ground combat) Thunderbolt-12 Large Pulse Laser often replaced the Parti-kill especially in the PPC-deficient Free World’s League theater. Two Main-point Point Defense AMS systems provide limited protection against incoming missile fire on the port and starboard sides.

Variants – The most common Post-Jihad variant of the Stonefish upgrades the missile launchers to a single ELRM-10 and returns the PPC as the main gun giving it superior long range fires at the cost of close in accuracy.

With five tons of extra cargo capacity the Stonefish has room for expanded capacity provided there are sufficiently skilled mechanics on-site. This is commonly used to stock another load of four tons ammo and some crew supplies or a lifeboat.

Mackerel Light Patrol Boat
Mass: 30 tons
Movement Type: Hydrofoil
Power Plant: Leenex 60 ICE
Cruising Speed: 75.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 118.8 kph
Armor: Protectech Light Standard
Armament:
     1 AC/5
Manufacturer: Caiman Watercraft
     Primary Factory: Carver V
Communication System: Basix 200-N
Targeting & Tracking System: Optisight 12-N
Introduction Year: 3040
Cost: 460,600 C-bills
Battle Value: 385

History – The first creation of Caiman Watercraft of Carver V, the Mackerel Light Patrol Boat was developed as a kit-built patrol craft for planetary militias utilizing as many Quiksell components as possible for economy purposes. The chief design team made more money selling the designs for their navalized Scorpion turret and marine Leenex ICE to Quiksell than they ever made exporting finished components to other powers. Still the design team achieved a certain amount of fame as their tinkering made Quiksell Scorpion and Tracked APC components ever so slightly more reliable.

Weapons and Equipment – The Mackerel utilizes a navalized version of the Deleon AC/5 as its only weapon. Often flak ammo is loaded in one of the ammo bins giving the Mackerel improved Anti-Air capabilities. Tracer rounds are often commonly used as Mackerel crews prefer nighttime engagements to limit the potential damage to their lightly armored ship. Five and a half tons of Protectech Light armor provides limited resistance to incoming fire. The best defense of a Mackerel crew however remains distance, speed, and concealment.

Variants – All Scorpion variant turrets can be utilized on a Mackerel hull, the most popular is however the twin Sureshot Mk VI SRM-6 version which is commonly used for inland waterway combat against light infantry.

Post-Jihad Mackerels commonly mount advanced autocannons of some type (commonly LBX-5s although RAC/5s and UAC/5s are also used) and ferro-fibrous armor with any extra mass coming out of its cargo capacity.

The extra 3 tons of cargo space in a basic Mackerel is often given over to an additional ton of fuel, ammo, and some naval mines.

Bullhead Medium Patrol Boat
Mass: 50 tons
Movement Type: Hydrofoil
Power Plant: 95 Fusion
Cruising Speed: 75.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 118.8 kph
Armor: Starshield-A Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
     2 LRM 5
     2 Anti-Missile System
     1 Large Laser
Manufacturer: Caiman Watercraft
     Primary Factory: Carver V
Communication System: Xilex-2000-N ‘Croak’
Targeting & Tracking System: Xilix-2000-N T&T
Introduction Year: 3055
Cost: 1,931,111 C-bills
Battle Value: 986

History- The second creation of Caiman Watercraft of Carver V for the Bullhead’s design cost was offset when Quiksell gave them several Bulldog turrets to experiment upon. Larger than the Mackerel, the Bullhead was meant to be a higher endurance machine than its smaller counterpart. Initially it was also meant to be powered by an I.C.E. engine however no such engine was available on the market at the time with the closest being the Leenex 100 I.C.E. of the Scorpion tank.

During development Kressly Warworks on Epsilon Eridani restarted production of the Beagle hovercraft. Dozens of these engines were purchased by Caiman who was able to deliver their first prototype shortly afterward. After their buyout by Vicore Caiman Watercraft received a license to manufacture their own engines for sale with the Bullhead.

Weapons and Equipment – The Bullhead uses a modified Bulldog turret with that tank’s Hovertek-Quads replaced by Delta-Dart LRM-5s alongside the Thunderbolt A5M large laser. One ton of its two is often loaded with incendiary LRMs for anti-structure work. Initial runs were equipped with LFN Lindbald Anti-Missiles on the port and starboard for missile defense although these were replaced by Mainpoint PD AMS after the Vicore buyout.

Variants – With more than 10% of its displacement unaccounted for the Bullhead has many permutations. It can utilize any Bulldog turret, with the dual LBX-2 and AC/2 variants being very popular as anti-air vessels, other options including Mech Mortars, AC/10, LBX-10, and even Light Gauss Rifles have all been used although these all cut into its extra cargo space.

Crews in the basic Bullhead commonly use their unallocated space for extra ammo, a lifeboat, and supplies.

Crocodile Type 1 Coastal Gunboat
Mass: 150 tons
Movement Type: Naval
Power Plant: GM 270 XL
Cruising Speed: 21.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 32.4 kph
Armor: Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:

Communication System: Crocodile OceanEar
Targeting & Tracking System: Crocodile Tears
Introduction Year: 3067
Cost: 22,170,750 C-bills
Battle Value: 1,544

History – Crocodile-class Coastal Gunboats were developed in response to the Sol Protectorate Militia’s need for conventional overmatch against the Clan and Commonwealth led Coalition against the Word of Blake/COMSTAR controlled Sol Protectorate. Many of them were rushed into production throughout the Free World’s League and Sol Protectorate. Enough of these survived the Jihad as Coalition forces bypassed worlds on their way to Terra that the designs were widespread throughout the Inner Sphere.

During the Post-Jihad era planetary Warlords seized upon these plans and rapidly built up their own wet naval strength to defend their independence from the negligent Imperial powers they formerly pledged fealty toward. 2SLDF Peacemakers continue to contend with these vessels despite Caiman Watercraft no longer existing like so many other Blakist affiliated corporations.

Weapons and Equipment – The Type 1 Coastal Gunboat is armed with an Armstrong Long Tom cannon mounted in its bow turret and RAMTECH 9500V Large Variable Speed Pulse Laser for close in protection against hovercraft and VTOLs. Its main gun can be used in an anti-air capacity if needed although most air defense is conducted by conventional floating interceptors or its escort. Its aft mounted lift hoist is commonly used to deploy and retrieve Puffin spotter drones (a remotely operated Boomerang Floatplane) which can provide long range recon capability and battle damage assessment.

Its ten ton liquid cargo capacity is used to refuel the Puffins and any other floatplanes, helicopters, or I.C.E. powered vessels in its flotilla. Twenty tons of cargo is often split between two Puffins, an extra load of Long Tom ammo, and supplies or accommodations for its ten man crew.

History – Based on the already successful Crocodile Type 1 Gunboat the Type 2 Missile Boat was used by the Sol Protectorate Militia against the Coalition forces during the Jihad. They continue to be used by Separatist militias throughout the Inner Sphere and among Trinity Alliance Home Guards.

Weapons and Equipment – Two Luxor Mobile Battery 1 Arrow IV launchers are mounted on the portside of a Type 2 providing directional shore bombardment capability in support of amphibious operations. Six tons of ammo provide steady firepower and is typically composed of a mix of precision and utility missies. A RAMTECH 9500V Large Variable Speed Laser provides forward protection against incoming VTOLs and Hovercraft but is fixed in position facing forward with limited skew.

Like the Type 1 the Type 2 possesses an internal cargo bay capable of carrying Puffin Spotter Drones. However, the most common drone utilized is in fact the lighter (at two tons) NapFind hover drone should it be required. Typically, its cargo bay is loaded with twelve tons of additional ammo and eight tons of miscellaneous supplies and accommodations for its crew and its liquid fuel storage goes instead to refueling landing craft.

Crocodile Type 3 ‘Nile’ Coastal Command Vessel
Mass: 150 tons
Movement Type: Naval
Power Plant: 270 XL
Cruising Speed: 21.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 32.4 kph
Armor: Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
     2 LB 5-X AC
Manufacturer: Caiman Watercraft
     Primary Factory: Carver V
Communication System: Crocodile OceanEar
Targeting & Tracking System: Crocodile Tears
Introduction Year: 3069
Cost: 21,862,750 C-bills
Battle Value: 1,254

History - The third and final version of the Crocodile vessel is the command variant commonly known as the ‘Nile’ which were completed under immense pressure on the SPM from Coalition forces to preserve the lives of COMSTAR and Blakist Precentor Commanders. These later ended up as prized vessels for planetary Warlords seeking refuge from vengeful imperial forces.

Weapons and Equipment – Unlike its other variants the Nile is lightly armed with only a pair of Mydron LBX-5 autocannons for anti-air and hovercraft defense. However, it includes room for a platoon of embarked marines and a command squad which can enable satellite uplink and coordinate larger flotillas of watercraft. The slightly larger cargo bay is often given over to crew accommodations and supplies rather than drones although it is capable of remotely operating drones launched from other vessels.

Warrior Attack Helicopter K-9 'Seadog'
Mass: 21 tons
Movement Type: VTOL
Power Plant: 70 Fusion
Cruising Speed: 108 kph
Maximum Speed: 162 kph
Armor: Standard
Armament:
     2 LRM 5
Manufacturer: Seadog Enterprises
     Primary Factory: Gibbs
Communication System: Xiliex-2000
Targeting & Tracking System: N&D Handsfree
Introduction Year: 3072
Cost: 1,944,375 C-bills
Battle Value: 494

History – As part of the 2SLDF’s counter-SPM and separatist operations of the Jihad Lockheed-CBM of Gibbs utilized the battle proven Warrior VTOL as the basic chassis to create a maritime patrol craft capable of ‘sniffing’ out underwater command posts, enemy submersibles, and submerged Battlemechs lying in wait. From this came the ‘Seadog’ which uses the Galas 70 micro fusion engine of the Mantis Hunter-Killer VTOL to increase the speed of the lighter Warrior to 162 kph. The SPM and separatists have also modified their Warriors for similar operations.

Weapons and Equipment – The Seadog is built with maritime operations in mind and as such possesses a flotation hull. Its Bloodhound Active Probe can detect submarines or Battlemechs down to approximately 250 meters under ideal conditions. Most of the time submersibles operate much closer to surface than this but if they detect an inbound Seadog they are likely to dive for depth if possible.

While its paired Coventry-Five Tubed LRMs cannot engage submerged targets the Seadog can carry four Torpedo bombs giving it a high chance of damaging and potentially disabling a submersible or forcing it to the surface. For Anti-surface operations these torpedoes and its missiles can target hostile watercraft, or the Seadog can deploy naval mines to deny the water to these vessels. Remote sensors can also be dropped on remote islets to monitor seaborne traffic.

Nero Drone Fireship
Mass: 10 tons
Movement Type: Hydrofoil
Power Plant: 60 ICE
Cruising Speed: 129.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 194.4 kph
Armor: Heavy Ferro-Fibrous
Manufacturer: Caiman Watercraft
     Primary Factory: Carver V
Communication System: Nero CC-1
Targeting & Tracking System: Nero TT-1
Introduction Year: 3069
Cost: 243,667 C-bills
Battle Value: 101

History – The Nero Drone Fireship was developed in the closing days of the Jihad by Caiman Watercraft as a cheap suicide drone from which the Word of Blake could strike back at the Coalition forces encroaching on their borders. It was rarely deployed in this way by the SPM but was commonly used by remnant Blakists and separatists as the most complex component is the drone controller (with less advanced builders substituting regular ferro-fibrous or standard armor for the more advanced heavy ferro-fibrous). The widespread availability of the Leenex 60 I.C.E. engine, the same that powers the Mackerel and Tracked APCs, in militia forces ensures that this design and the terrorists that use it will continue to threaten 2SLDF Peacekeepers and maritime trade for a long time to come.

Weapons and Equipment – Equipped with only a booby trapped engine and drone operating system, the Nero is capable of crippling hostile hover or watercraft and severely damaging harbor structures. Separatist forces typically use the fast moving watercraft to probe coastal defenses prior to launching a larger assault controlling them from a VTOL or naval command platform although ground based control units are also common.
