I’m headed up this afternoon, yay! I’m planning to go to the What’s Up? Event on Thursday and I’ll be playing Alpha Strike most of Saturday. I’ll try to get booth pictures of anything that shows up at the con as well, but with the Kickstarter, who knows if there will be all that much new right now.
Look forward to seeing all you other BT fan again!
-
I am hoping to see painted prototypes of the Invasion box and the first four star/lance pack mechs!
-
the patreon had painted prototypes of the Mad Cat and Shadow Cat so those will be there for sure
-
One of these days I'm finally going to get to attend Gencon. It's either I have the money but don't have the time or I have the time but not the money. :(
-
Cant wait for the updates on the "whats up with Catalyst"
-
That reminds me, did you folks ever see the fully painted Awesome? They had it at Origins, but I don’t remember if Anyone ever put up any pictures.

Lucky you, I have neither.

Not officially . . . I saw it in background . . . Wolf's Dragoons black/red won out?
-
Now, the more important question for those of us who cannot get to Gencon....
Will the What's up with Catalyst? Event be streamed?
Craig
-
Anyone know what Catalyst's draw items are going to be for their booth? In the past we got a list of all the new and exclusive items they'd have for sale, but this year I only see it for Shadowrun.
-

Craig
They plan to stream it if the WiFi gods cooperate. I will also attempt to record it and drop it on YouTube as a backup.
-
Where will the youtube links be posted?
In this thread?
-
Oh, and here is a pic of the Awesome from Origins.
(https://1pkqjg.bn.files.1drv.com/y4m2x9fGs9rnFtaRAFHnlll2JqKw8PjxCNIdQsWXflb2ulQMdsgNfpNjylX8hwzzY6dPG1PPzuvhKaT0z_YYSknc_4gqYCsPBXOEMbxHaS-7oVZEdM8RvOtBGm_cYdvfuA1-t06YPizQ5rNf_2EpttuaU2-PKFL98rdjy2HNpjFJZsRubeoBYhSIHZbSOS9u_CiTMIXHGMSgyv_316Jrz54xg?width=768&height=1024&cropmode=none)
And yes, I will post YouTube links here, or possibly in its own thread if the official video isn’t up. Last year the official stream was on Facebook. This year may be similar.
-
Got my first Battletech game of the con in!
Needless to say, my wife won. Highlights include the Shadow Hawk doing most of my damage for a while(until a peeper found the AC ammo), my Griffin losing its PPC fairly early, but then having several turns in a row of jumping behind the Awesome and kicking, and the game ending with two one-legged mechs trying to prop themselves up and kill each other, her blowing large pieces out of the Griffin each turn, and me trying to crit with my LRMs. Alas, a Griffin's torso can only take so many PPCs...

Can’t get in the vendor hall yet, but I can SEE the CGL booth. I’m in line for the running of the nerds, so hopefully there is something worth standing around for!
-

I just landed, and have my a/v gear with me. I’m planning to stream on CGL FB. Once I’m sure my gear will work, I’ll post a notice.
-
CGL has new fiction, some IWM wasps and valkyries, al the stuff from origins, aluminum dice sets, Steiner and red duke shirts. Energy drinks are back. There is a poster, but don’t think it is new. Not sure if I missed anything.
There will be a leviathans Kickstarter in 2020!
IWM has clear resin exterminators, transport leviathans, I saw some other stuff I’m not sure they announced like the Ursus II.
Will try to put up pics as I can.

Oh my god....did you see this in CGLs Instagram????
IlClan is for Real
And some nice oldschool covers on TacOps
-
Hey sweet we’ve got an ilclan cover. I think we knew it was going to be that art but it’s good to see they have it to the mock-up stage
Also I want the TO with the Compendium: RoW cover BAD
-
Well, the Diorama this year is Wolf Clan forces, light Omnis, heavy/assault standard battlemechs, Elementals & some Black Wolf against a Republic mix of a heavy Triarii lance, heavy Dawn Guard lance, two Standing Guard lances (Jackalopes & mixed med lance), and a pair of unknown Republic mechs in red- new Highlander and Mad Dog Mk III.
Oooh, that picture needs to ZOOM! I see Invasion Box and what looks like a IS Lance . . .
-

With all the updated mechs coming in the kickstarter, it makes using old art on the new rule books even more perplexing.

i think it was financial necessity. when the core reprints were going through, it was about the same time the box sets were in development. decisions were made before much of the new artwork had even been conceptualized and it was the lean period - they had largely shut the line down between TRO: SW in july 2017 (which was itself done with minimal cost) and the slow restarting of product flow with Shattered Fortress around last year's gencon. art is expensive and you know what's inexpensive? old art. it's the 35th anniversary so at least you have nostalgia to fall back on.
i'm open to the opinion that new art would be better, but i don't think why old cover art was used is a mystery if you look at the timing

are those AS card packs flanking the ASCE?
-
Yeah, I was trying to figure out as well . . .
Probably unintended, but ASCE & BMM having new art that matches the GOAC & upcoming Clan Invasion art does give a visual hint of the primary books to tie in.

It's a 35th Anniversary thing. Exalting the past on present-day product.

AS Succession Wars and Clan Invasion card packs.

Any option that doesn't require a facebook login? Trying to write my shopping list.

My issue isn't that they're reusing art, it's that they're using old art. It just looks dated. I'll miss that Uziel too. Always been my favorite cover of all the hardcovers.

you don't need to log in to watch the video, fortunately (at least i didnt)

a perfectly reasonable stance. my guess is that many of these covers were used because they came from during the height of BT's 90s popularity and since the clan invasion is new again, it subtly draws a line that tugs on heartstrings. but i'm not a graphic designer or a marketing expert so cgl would have to explain why they chose what they did
-
The videos they posted of the product history and in development shelves were nice. Physical copies of the clan mechs look gooood.
-

I click the play button and it opens up another tab telling me to log in. :(
-
gross!
-
I was hoping for some zoomed in images of the mechs
-

Same here. Tried to watch the first video and FB wanted me to login.
-
Given I date back to the BattleDroids box, that Timber Wolf on the old old box background certainly tugged my heartstrings. Would pick that one up over the Legacy cover version.
-
Anyone at the show have a picture of the plastic dice they have this year? I think I have all from last year except McCarron's Armored Cavalry. Wasn't sure if there are any other ones out there I have missed.

I just saw a photo of ilClan on my discord. This thread is slacking.

I hope the heck someone record the session! That's going to be too important to miss! I will be eternally grateful.
EDIT: sorry for the grammar. I was dictating to my phone and got gibberish i missed some fixes.

When the retro art was initially announced, I thought it was going to be retro-inspired art vs using old book covers and box art. I understand why they went the direction they did but it’s certainly not my preferred option vs a new piece
-
We've have been talking about it in other threads https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=64318.msg1530491#msg1530491
Good to see at least one of these threads getting things done around here!

Bah, that's not frosty. There was:
1) confusion over which books you meant (ie. people not aware of the retro core rulebook covers or that you were refering to them)
2) people saying some books had retro covers and some did not.
3) and people agreeing with you.
not a single pitchfork in sight :).

I have a decent number of pictures, including ones of the prototype clan plastics, in the album I linked on page 1. I guess the link didn’t work or no one wanted to click on it! Lazy butts!

I didn’t see any new plastic dice. The new dice I saw were the aluminum ‘pucks’ with metal dice inside (2 normal sized ones, and four small movement-dice-sized ones), anodized and with a faction logos on them.

Wolves over Titan eh? Think that answers whose fleet it was at the end of Shattered Fortress (as if there was any doubt).
Also what's with the Millenium Falcon's, the picture is really messing with my brain.

Thanks very much for sharing these pics, sadlerbw, much appreciated mate, especially by those who would otherwise never get a chance to see so much new Battletech stuff all in one spot like this!
I'd fight a Ghost Bear naked to get my hands on those new Clan Invasion Mechs (I'd tape my balls to the inside of my leg so they didn't get caught on a Ghost Bear claw though)...
That diorama looks great too...when I first laid eyes on it, I immediately thought that the Mechs were fighting on top of a mirror-imaged Millennium Falcon...
So much cool artwork, this is what really grabs people, new and old alike, it fires up the imagination so well...
OOOoooh, those Ghost Bear dice looks very cool...I wonder if these are the same ones I'll be getting from the Kickstarter???
-
Those prototypes look great.

Who know that Titan was made from starships from a long time ago in a galaxy far away
-
Wolves over Titan eh? Think that answers whose fleet it was at the end of Shattered Fortress (as if there was any doubt).
Also what's with the Millenium Falcon's, the picture is really messing with my brain.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. ;D
Space ship model kits are a great source of bits for a project like that, but some shapes are just too iconic to miss.
-
That was simply awesome. Thanks for working so hard on this stuff guys! THanks for post links to the pictures, 00Dawg!

Yeah, I just went for obscuring; you can't hide the Falcon. Folks in various places have picked up on the Falcons, the snowspeeder, the Vamp, and of course, model ships. Someone is also zeroing in on one of the other major contributors, but they haven't named it yet. Waiting for the remaining two major contributors to be noticed, along with the Easter eggs.

My immediate thought was, "HOW DARE they do that to the Falc....oooooh neat 'Mechs".

Brief combat report for the Feature Event on Thursday:
Scenario was the 8th Battle of Hesperus II, DCMS vs LCAF. DCMS was attempting to storm into a Defiance Industries mech factory.
Initial deployment had the LCAF deploying two assault and one heavy lance to defend, as well as using BSP points for some minefields and eventually artillery shots. DCMS brought on a company of medium/heavy mechs with better skills, and had BSP allocated to bombing runs.
Things went badly for the LCAF from the start. A DCMS bombing run landed on a Battlemaster in the middle of the field on turn 1. The 6x5 clusters scattered to land on the rear chart, two clusters hit LTR, two crits, and popped the ammo. Dead Beemer.
Within the next couple turns, the other LCAF Battlemaster took head hits, saw the oncoming Drac forces, and stayed prone next to an L1 hill to keep from getting hammered. When it did stand up, another head hit killed it.
Meanwhile, an LCAF Atlas behind partial cover took a floating TAC, still went CT, and got double-gyroed to drop it behind the hill.
To top it off, LCAF shooting was abysmal. I was driving a WHM-6R, and of my first 8-9 PPC shots, only 1 landed... and it hit a hill.
DCMS had a Phoenix Hawk LAM zooming around the board, with another entering later.
Towards the end of the game, a "Last Resort" force of factory workers deployed inside the factory itself, driving mechs and vees straight off the assembly line.
The couple LAMs and a Spider made it inside the factory right near the end. The Phoenix Hawk LAM decided to shoot a cache of machine gun ammo in the corner of the factory. The resulting explosion vaporized the PXH and an adjacent LCAF Banshee, crushed several other units into the walls, and dropped half the factory roof on what was left.
A rather frustrating game in the sense of "nothing is going right for us", but an enjoyable time nonetheless.

Well, I see what looks like two sides of a old battery powered B&D tool kit I had.
Surprised no one mentioned the new Executioner positioned behind the Tomahawk, a Classic Omni slipped onto the scene.

DeWalt drill case. Not what I was referring to, unfortunately.
At least one guy has noticed the Classic Executioner.

I was hoping for some zoomed in images of the mechs
Sadlerbw had some good ones - I took a few as well, but have not had a chance to post yet.

This feels like a riddle...

If a Marauder keeps having really good numbers against you, don't worry. This is the kind of problemthat solves itself.
Remember, folks: The corollary to No Guts, No Galaxy is No Guts, No Sausage.
-
Hope someone could post a review/unboxing of the AS Card sets... That stock might run out rather quickly, I think... :P
-
I'm rather curious about those myself. Cards by themselves don't interest me hugely, but if there's more than just mech cards, I may change my mind.
-
For those going to gencon, the half-price books in greenwood, southern suburb of indianapolis, had on Wednesday 'bout eighteen shelf-inches of old battletech novels. By now they’re probably gone, but here’s your heads up if they aren’t. The earliest one was Ideal War, IIRC.
It even had a couple I don't, but given it was the 'capellian solution' I declined to pick them up.
-

There are ten cards that are combat commands (regiments/clusters), basically a tiny Combat Manual entry. Background fluff, experience rating, unit composition, faction, insignia. back side is their Special Command Ability choices with circles to mark the ones chosen and a brief description of each.
SW has one for each of the five Great Houses, and five mercenaries.
CI has one for each of the seven Invading Clans, one Rasalhague, one St. Ives, and one Comstar.
-
Thank you Charlie Tango to allow me to hold the only OOP mech on that grinder map!
A purple colored, and brand spanking new, freshly painted Archer... yes the new one that isn't even ready for the public yet!
Thanks CT!

As the kids say, oof! Went to the What’s Up event. Was in the Crown Plaza dungeon again, which I think screwed with the live stream. Got to meet Cubby, and thanked him for the work he is doing talking to us goofballs!
Trying to get the video up to YouTube, but the internet and my old iPhone are fighting me! I know other folks were recording as well, so maybe someone else will beat me to it. I did take some notes though, and here are a couple interesting tidbits from the event:
- ilClan got pushed back by Shadowrun and the Kickstarter, but is getting more attention now. Probably won’t make 2019, but 2020 for sure.
- they really don’t know how they are going to deal with the massive number of names and pictures from the Kickstarter yet, but have been talking with the authors. Randall apparently sent a bunch of pictures of strange men to Blaine Pardoe recently!
- Brent DOES want to redesign the quads, but they don’t fit well on the hex bases so they haven’t been done yet. The Goliath and Scorpion probably will get re-works at some point.
- a plush Urbie as a stretch goal in the KS is not out of the question...and was heartily supported by the fans in attendance.
- MechWarrior: Destiny is pretty far along. Loren estimated 3/4 of the way to being on shelves.
- Brent is planning more re-organized TRO’s past the two we have now.
- fiction, not just BT fiction, is selling well.
- bonfire of Worlds will get a POD release.
- more audiobooks are coming, but I forget any specifics.
- Jason Hardy LOVES snickerdoodles!
Separately, Leviathans is coming back! 2020 Kickstarter, but they have reactivated the monsters in the sky website and will be blogging there. Randall said they are also looking for some play testers for the new factions, and I think you can contact CGL about that through said website.
There was other Shadowrun and Dragonfire stuff as well, but I didn’t take very good notes on it!
EDIT: fixed some of my sleep deprived mistakes that others pointed out, and remembered about the Snickerdoodles.

good news, authors, you don't have to come up with any new character names for 30 years!

Bonfire of Worlds?
-
I think more POD is coming in general, but right now they are pretty heavy into getting all the writers moving on new fiction, and John Helfers apparently needs to sleep once in a while, so no firm dates on when it will happen yet.
Also, I’m pretty sure I made up a name for a book that doesn’t exist. I think it’s funny though, so I’m going to leave it and you can figure out what they really said (rather than what I hurriedly wrote down) when YouTube finishes munching on the video!
-
Just got my PODs of Forever Faithful and Kell Hounds Ascendant today. They are quite nice.
sadlerbw, any word on if that con exclusive battle mat of theirs is ever going to be on the CGL store?
-
Watched the video. Some clarification:

It got pushed back because the storyline needs to work, and that can’t be rushed. Chinese holiday doesn’t remotely come into the picture. It’s not a production bottleneck.
- Brent DOES want to redesign the quads,
::) Sure. That SLAYS me.

Bonfire of Worlds?
I'm guessing it's Embers of War, which got a traditional print run prior to the PoD inititive (and yes, technically it had two print runs on account of the pre-retail release at Gencon like four years ago). Though there was an ad for Bonfire of Worlds in the back of one of the BattleCorps stories from the Kickstarter digital rewards, so presumably it's also getting a PoD release.
-

Also what's with the Millenium Falcon's, the picture is really messing with my brain.
Obviously on the latest Kessel Run it made .5 past light speed, went plaid, then broke into another universe before crashing.

"It'll fight off nightmares! Really! What imaginary monster can stand up to an AC/10?"

Looks like there's the nose with the ball turret and gun from a Cobra FANG helicopter in there.
-
A lot of the greeblies are from the Hexagon building sets that have been released by a bunch of different game companies as terrain in the past. They've shown up in other BT model photos, notably in Total Warfare.

That checks out. Besides the bc anthologies 1-5, embers is war is the lone non-pod offering. But... bonfire too? Pretty please?
Well we know the Clans win, so...

I mean if I didn’t know and you told me in 1700 at the height of Louis XIV’s power that Napoleon would have an even bigger empire in 1812, I’d still want the details

Just a FYI to those at the show. We got some restocks in on clear exterminator and leviathan so the limited per purchase has been removed. Factory did a great job getting more done for the show last two days.

Another good catch! That suggestion actually came from Dave Fanjoy, who has used them for photos in the past. We were running out of budget and out of parts on hand, and that solution helped us get to the finish line in time.

Having watched it through, corrections from upthread/additions:
It is Bonfire of Worlds that's getting a PoD copy, and apparently soon.
The ilClan discussion primarily spoke about bandwidth in writing and layout, but at the end Brent said that production schedules meant it would be 2020 regardless of when the writing was complete.
Brent said the Quads will be redesigned, but he wouldn't guarantee they'd come out in plastic.
IWM versions of the new redesigns will have different poses from the plastics
Randall said Kickstarter backers will get a beta copy of MechWarrior Legends Destiny

yes, destiny.
legends is what you have access to in the KS
-
IWM versions of the new redesigns will have different poses from the plastics
Randall said Kickstarter backers will get a beta copy of MechWarrior Legends
More clarifications:
Different poses would be ideal but that’s not definite. At minimum the IWM versions will be multi-piece of the same poses as plastic. Anything beyond that would be an investment that IWM may or may not be interested in. So, we’ll see.
Destiny Beta would likely consist of pre-layout Word docs. I don’t foresee any production time in the next few weeks being spent to hammer out a laid-out Destiny Beta. It could happen, but would be a poor use of resources right now.
-
I thought he said Mechwarrior Destiny
Argh, yes. I blame the way too high aircon in work.

I'm rather curious about those myself. Cards by themselves don't interest me hugely, but if there's more than just mech cards, I may change my mind.
looks like 10 unit cards. one for each invading clan, comstar, St. Ives, FRR.
Wolves get the wolf spiders, falcons get the falcon guards.
Edit - the bears get a brutal combination of SCAs.

Even just pre-layout Word docs would be awesome to see. I can scrounge up more than enough players that'd be on board to try it out ahead of the final product.

As it should be

Someone elsewhere picked up on the AT-ST parts. At this point all that's left is to name the other major Star Wars toy contributor and find the Easter eggs (which are admittedly just placed for humor, and a couple are in plain sight).

Part of the problem is which pictures you look at . . . some have been blurry and some the angle does not contribute to detailed examination of it all.

They've lined up Turtledove to write Leviathans? Wow... That's like getting Asimov or Heinlein to write Battletech (well, other than the whole "having to bring Isaac Asimov or Robert Heinlein back to life" thing...)

Two novellas were included in the box, IIRC one of them was serialised on the website as well. And i think there were one or two other stories on the website as well.

I'm not sure I'll jump on the bandwagon for the Leviathans game, but with those writers I WILL be reading the fiction that comes out for it.

I remember the leviathans box as pretty big, which means that I gotta say no. I'm crunched for space, and I've already got a couple more on the way.

Yeah, excited for both Stirling & Turtledove . . . I LOVED the Peshawar Lancers. I wish he would write a sequel. As for Turtledove, the Invasion series and his alt history with WWI being fought between N & S really brought out the horrors of the trenches which really messed up my great-grandfather- getting there as a orphan at 17 or 18, spending the time in the trenches, and then coming home to try to start a life.
-
Thanks to everyone who corrected the late-night rambling mistakes I made in my report! I went back and edited some of the worst ones.
I also remembered that Jason Hardy apparently really likes Snickerdoodles, so there is a recipe for them in one of the shadowrun books he showed off. How could I forget that!

Some, maybe all (it’s up to IWM), will be available as metal at a much later date.

Thank you for the clarification

I just started thinking about how I can get the wife to agree to my daughters snuggling with a BattleMech :D
Look if they are going to do this then they need to do it right. They need to make a Plushie body pillow.

Kodiak for Clanners, Urbie for Spheroids.

Well, I I did see a booth in the vendor hall named “Waifu vending machine” so...

Looks like there's the nose with the ball turret and gun from a Cobra FANG helicopter in there.
Not just the Fang, but also the laser cannon from the back of the original GIJoe Jeep that Clutch drove.
Loved that you as a kid, and the Cobra Stinger (IIRC) that was derived from it.

At gencon masters n minions. Poor catalyst guy. Both his mechs just took gyro tacs from a 3025 battlemaster, then missed a easy kick.
Edit - we lost.
Three of us chose mobile mechs, yet we didn't move in tandom. 6/9/9 pixie, 4/6/6 thud, and me in a phantom C. Unfortunately, two of their mechs were back-scratchers as well, and since everything had equalized pilots, they could hit us.
-
Thanks again to everyone at Catalyst and everyone who volunteers to make this event happen! I can’t express how much I appreciate the effort from all involved. It’s great seeing folks from the forum in real life and putting names with faces. I apologize to any of you that were forced to suffer through my terrible dad jokes.
Special shout out to the Alpha Strike players and event runners. I had tons of fun, even if I did end up having to fight as a dirty Snake and bring death upon my beloved Davions. I swear, all we wanted was Jonathon Davion’s autograph. If you hadn’t opened fire we would have grabbed a selfie and headed back to the DropShip!
Hope to see you all again next year.
-

Yeah, yeah, well you don't blow up fuel tanks with strategic medical bades built into them for an autograph. You took getting your Mechs torn up by my Hammerheads like a champ!
-
- Brent DOES want to redesign the quads, but they don’t fit well on the hex bases so they haven’t been done yet. The Goliath and Scorpion probably will get re-works at some point.
- a plush Urbie as a stretch goal in the KS is not out of the question...and was heartily supported by the fans in attendance.
I don't see why the Goliath would be so bad, its legs pretty much roll straight down from the body. The Scorpion (and mechs like the Tarantula, etc) on the other hand...yeh.
Also as the person who originally suggested the plush UrbanMech here in the forums, I demand it happen!

Have they ever said why you can't get the gencon exclusives outside of gencon?
For instance Wyrd Miniatures (makers of Malifaux and a few other things) have always sold their gencon stuff on their webstore during gencon for those of us that can't go to gencon.
Really been getting under my skin with Catalyst. I saw the dice sets for 2019 hit ebay at $200 they are beautiful and it just feels like a dig at long term fans that can't attend that Catalyst offers no other way than to be there (or knowing someone that is going there). Or am I dolt and missed some place that they do offer sales?
-
They do not, what you see are folks flipping what they picked up extra. The KS is honestly a good effort by Catalyst to let everyone get some dice if they want faction dice- especially since they are offering 3 dead Clans, the FRR, and some speculation on FedCom dice rather than LC/A or FS. Some of the swag is KS only and others like the dice are not listed as exclusive- however, IMO stuff like Burrock or Fire Mandrill dice are not popular enough to make more than what they need for the KS which is why I am getting some I expect to be low-interest. Kurita, League, FedSuns, CapCon, Falcon, Bear? Yeah, I expect those to be in stock more . . . and I will point to the t-shirts done this year as a example, they are selling those on CGL store and have already done another run.
-
I have a question concerning the faction dice we have available on the BT kickstarter.
The $80.000 stretch goal mentions "Each add-on (see bellow) buys an additional choice".
What does this actually mean? Do I get another pair of faction dice free if I buy any of the add-ons? Does that mean that if I buy a pair of dice I get another pair for free (with choice of faction)? Or if I buy a salvage box, do I get another pair free (again with choice of faction)?
-
No, you get another faction option. We started with only the invading Clans as faction choice. Then we unlocked more stretch goals and by now, we have 29 or 30 factions unlocked for our choice of shirts, dice etc.
-

Yes, I know that we started only with the 4 invading clans for dice. But there were separate stretch goals that unlocked other clans. I don't see how those goals are connected with what I have quoted. Other stretch goals aren't mentioned, only add-ons.
-
Ah, I misread. Sorry.
It means, if you buy multiple of the addons, you get multiple choices. Buy, for example, two dice add-ons and you can chose two additional pair of dice.
-
They ran out of the latest anthology before I could get a copy. :'(

Yeah I know the ebayers are flippers I was just wondering if I had somehow been missing the fact that CGL actually does sell the gencon stuff online through a webstore other than the main one.. never know /shrug Just didnt want to totally rule it out in my head

Was there big event games at GenCon 2019? I've not really heard anyone talk about them.
The diorama for Titan Shipyards 3151 sounds like it would have been cool battle.
-
Dunno if anyone's still in town, but the Half Price Books at 844 US-31, Greenwood, IN 46142 has the old Recon, Medium, and Heavy Lance box sets for sale right now. I'm not grabbing them myself because the con has already eaten my budget.

There were at least 7 'big event' games for BattleTech; I will have pictures and writeups for the Clan Grand Melee and Clan Trial of Bloodright (Roshak) in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the updates. Gencon was a Gencant this year for me

- ilClan got pushed back by Shadowrun and the Kickstarter, but is getting more attention now. Probably won’t make 2019, but 2020 for sure.
If only there were a "get ilClan done already" kickstarter I could have backed instead.

Nah. at the end of the day, I don't care nearly enough about physical miniatures. Having them will be nice, but they are nothin to me in the face of seeing the plot advance. Plus, if there had been that alternative, I'd have probably gone the equivalent of Khan or Full Kerensky on it. Wouldn't be any money left for the other one.
-

There is a chance that the so-far-con-only dice "pucks" and rectangles will be in the web store later this year. I don't have details on when, I just know that that was the intention.

Jesus tap dancing Christ I hope so, I want them really bad but there's just no way I'm paying that kind of money for them. I take it the Alpha Strike cards weren't con exclusives right? (just someone has them listed that way on Ebay)

I spent the entirety of Saturday playing an Alpha Strike campaign. SLDF vs. Kurita in the Davion war of succession. I ended up playing as a filthy snake, and still haven’t washed the shame away! I didn’t get pictures though, and I’ve been mostly dead since returning from the con, so I haven’t even tried a write up. I know the battle of the superheavies was run as well, and there were thematic throwback Thursday games as well, but I wasn’t in those.

Still amused that the Star League secret hiding place for wounded Davion nobility was inside a gas tank. Genius concealment, or a statement about how they felt about having to save his bacon.

I believe I read somewhere that the Con edition had a couple of exclusive cards per deck.
-

That's probably going to be a sloooow burn. Not sure you've seen the Technical Readout: Clan Invasion preview on DTRPG, but there's an intro memo to the "ilKhan" from a "Star League Loremaster" dated 3250.
-

I think he means release IlClan, which means he'll get waht he wants next year from the sounds of it.
-
Based on the premise we’ve seen from the trio of blurbs, I don’t ever really want to go to 3250. It can be out there acting as a stable narrator with appropriate historical distance to offer an interesting point of view downstream. Way downstream.

Jesus tap dancing Christ
Please don't. There are those of us who do find misusing that name offensive. Definitely don't think you meant anything by it, but just be mindful, OK? :)

IINM, the card sets sold at cons were exclusives (though I think at least one of them is sold now as PoD on Drivethru RPG).

Why is that? I think I’d feel the same way, if I didn’t know the opportunities that it creates.
-
Why is that? I think I’d feel the same way, if I didn’t know the opportunities that it creates.
Not him but I think I can see the argument. Time jumps are disorientating and lead into "but what happened between those times" style of questions. Concerns of a further Clan scale power creep or invalidating of old tech is also one I have seen from others. I'm approaching it from an open mind since there is so little information out, but I understand those concerns.
-
when was it said there's gonna be a time jump? I gathered that the idea is to continue from IlClan. Latest TROs are just framed from 3250 perspective. Perhaps the framing device will continue in post-IlClan books, regardless when they are set.
-
Why is that? I think I’d feel the same way, if I didn’t know the opportunities that it creates.
As 3250 should serve as an end point for the BT timeline of sorts, with snippets of that time released as teases. It serve as both reboot and end as nothing tangible would be released beyond that Era. With all of the remaining Houses w/ subservient Clan allies poised to do battle once more (w/ reborn Navies). Maybe a list of prominent personalities, notable regiments/wings, hotspots, tech update (extinctions/fin evolutions), and odd teases for a future that will never come.
After a few decades you could always lift the moratorium not unlike 40K and have a little more fun. ;)
-
I believe I read somewhere that the Con edition had a couple of exclusive cards per deck.
That is my understanding also. I think it was the unit cards that were Con exclusive, the mechs will be released to retail at some point.
-
Was a pleasure sharing the shame of being Kuritans.
Still amused that the Star League secret hiding place for wounded Davion nobility was inside a gas tank. Genius concealment, or a statement about how they felt about having to save his bacon.
I had a great time as well! I still maintain Jonathan Davion was already dead and the SLDF just dumped the body into the fuel tank to hide the evidence. Thanks for letting me steal the Aero forces all the time. I was itching to try out the new rules, and I had way too much fun bombing things.
Changing gears, I'm interested in 3250, but there are a few significant real-life questions about a time jump that still make me hesitant. I'm not talking about whether the Great Houses still exist or any plot stuff like that. I worry more about things like, are we going to end up with another tech level? Are we going to need a new rulebook to support a time jump? How much of the current support material I have (minis, maps, recordsheets, AS cards) will still be valid and usable in that new timeframe? These are questions that don't have a right and wrong answer, just answers with different consequences. I know they can tell a good story no matter what the next era happens to be. I'm worried about what it means for playing the actual game(s).
Of course, we still aren't finished wrapping up the Dark Age yet, so I don't expect answers to any of those questions are ready. Personally, I'm happy to wait until after IlClan drops and hear what they have to say then.
-
So I have a question regarding the GenCon dice tins that are sold. How do they retail for at the Con for?
-
The "hockey pucks" were $50.00.
-
I take it the Alpha Strike cards weren't con exclusives right? (just someone has them listed that way on Ebay)
Oof, yeah $60 a deck on eBay.
>_>
-
Some of the “hockey pucks” are up on eBay for $125!
-
I've had a couple shots at picking up the pucks. I just didn't see a $50 value there. I do wonder how much of that is for the dice and how much is for the puck.
-

I saw one for $200 Cnd

Con exclusives are almost always heinously overpriced on the secondary market

That puck was $50?
Maybe I should've checked before grabbing the last Smoke Jaguar one.
-

First listings where at $200 a puck.. really hoping they will come out again as been said because I'd love to get one

Yea the pucks would be cool to have but I am not paying scalper prices.
-

Herb said it, or that was what people got from his comments when he first floated the idea of 3250 like 10 years ago.
That said post-ilClan a time-skip is likely mandatory as Grey Monday has probably inflicted as much economic damage as the Succession Wars combined, so a period of re-building is needed.
-
What Herb said years ago no longer matters. New line devs and all that.
-
Was a pleasure sharing the shame of being Kuritans.
Still amused that the Star League secret hiding place for wounded Davion nobility was inside a gas tank. Genius concealment, or a statement about how they felt about having to save his bacon.
As a proud member of the Star League for this event, I have to say, we were equally surprised at the gas tank being the hiding spot. I suspect Kerensky had a good spot all prepared and Davion, severely concussed and hallucinating, declared that he should make his escape in a hot air balloon before walking his crippled butt over to the fuel tank.
-

I've had nights like that, too.

Re: time Jump - I want this because I want a chance to simplify the gear again.
We can go back to a weapon list thats more 3025 in length, so I dont have to try and remember all these rules about 100 different weapon and equipment types.
-
3025 still exists, no?
-
Yes . . . rock, scissors, paper, lizard, Spock . . . superior to rock, paper, scissors.
-
3025 still exists, no?
Ewwww.... it is so worn out...
-
3025 still exists, no?
Not as a current place and time—setting—where we can all get on the same page, no. Box sets, novels, sourcebooks…all disconnected.
-

Exactly this.
-
Better to rebuild that then fly away to the magical wolf empire in the sky
I grew weary of the timeline stretching once we hopped ahead to 3150. Too many pots to water and frankly too much fan hostility. If anything the Kickstarter shows an appetite remains for the base settings
-
Better to rebuild that
How to do that is the million dollar question.
-

I would add, 3025 presently exists only on the Capellan Confederation, Aurigan Coalition, Magistracy of Canopus and Taurian Concordat borders, via the BattleTech computer game for many new (potential) players. Which is why, I loved that CGL released the Arano Housebook.
-
We got ER 3052, ER 3062 . . . did we ever get one for 3025?
I understand some folks want that, some never want to be faced with the Clans or even with the option of a mixed tech base. Its not my thing, I came in with MW2 so to me they are foundational to the setting but I know that is not the case for others.

That was the CGL shirt for this year. Sun Zhang was, I think, two years ago, it featured a Shadow Hawk Thunderbolt (I stand corrected) on the back (I could be wrong about both of those, I don't collect the shirts).
There's been discussion of putting the shirts on our web store, though no timeline has been created.
-
It does seem like the shirts aren't hitting every con. Last Gencon was the CC with the Thunderbolt, but then Adepticon had FedSuns with a shadowhawk while this year's Gencon had The Lyran one (blue this time) with the commando(wait, Lyran's got the light mech!?). I do hope there's a way to get them all. I'd hate it if I missed one.

I finished my writeup for the Bloodright:

Ah, well, I hope they put them up on the CGL store then.

Was any more information given regarding the diorama beyond "It's 3151, There are Wolves fighting for control of the Titan Yards" ?
-
From what i read it looks like there was only diorama and no big scenario ran. Hope there one next year.
-
From what i read it looks like there was only diorama and no big scenario ran. Hope there one next year.
I'm not sure what you were reading but there were multiple "big" scenarios:
- Alpha Strike: Battle of the Super Heavies
- Alpha Strike: Throwback Thursday
- Alpha Strike: Turning Points
- Battletech Feature (events on three days)
- Battletech Missions (events on three days)
- Battletech Throwback Thursday
- Wolf's Dragoons Cadet Program
-
I think he meant with the diaroms or the events portrayed in the diorama.
-
Does CGL know how many people registered for the KS at GenCon?
-
Considering apart from the first day, it was the slowest period of the campaign, I would say not many OR enough to keep the totals from dipping below 20k. Either is possible
-
Backers, not $ . . . I figure folks did the $1 thing at GenCon.
-
I think he meant with the diaroms or the events portrayed in the diorama.
At the very least that's what I'm curious to know more about.
-
If anyone has an extra day in Indianapolis (IE, the 'sign in' Thursday) then the newfields museum is worth visiting. The design section is flinch-worthy due to ergonomic impracticalities, but the asia and african sections are cool.
-

I can't speak to ALL the events, but I don't believe any of the Alpha Strike events had anything to do with the daiorama. Throwback Thursday was...I can't remember exactly, but it had its own map and minis. Battle of the Superheavies is Republic vs. Davion (at least last years was.) The Saturday Alpha Strike events were Star League vs. Kurita with just a pinch of Davion thrown in. I think one of the Total Warfare events was one of the battles of Hesperus, but I'm not totally sure.

There is one card for each chassis listed in the corresponding Technical Readout. Each of those cards has the main variant shown there plus another variant on the back. I went with the new RS:SW variant if there was one.
There was then about 10 more cards that I put extra variants of those same chassis. These cards have different chassis on each side.
So there is a Hunchback card with the 4G and the 4 P, and there’s a card with a 4SP on one side and maybe another chassis on the other. (Hunchback might be a bad example there, I might have put two extra Hunchback variants). For Clan Invasion, the extra variants are all additional clan Omni configs.
Those total up to 98 unit cards in each deck.
There are then 10 combat command cards, similar to Combat Manual entrees.
SW has one combat command from each major House, and 5 mercenary.
CI has one combat command from each invading clan, one st. Ives, one Rasalhague, and one ComStar.

Nope. It says ‘Giant Awesome Take your selfie with me’...seriously.
However, when I asked I was told it was supposed to be Black Widow company of Wolfs Dragoon’s.

Which is what I would expect, but it would be nice to see the insignia . . .

Catalyst sells dice etc at 6 or 7 conventions that they currently support with a retail booth
1. Gary Con* (Lake Geneva WI) - Feb/Mar
2. Adepticon (Chicago, IL) March
3. Origins (Columbus OH) June
4. Gencon (Indianapolis IN) August
5. PAX West (Seattle WA) September
6. PAX Unplugged (Philadelphia PA) December
7. Mechcon** (Vancouver BC) December
They previously had a retail booth at at least 5 other conventions in the US, but no longer do so.
Dragon Con (Atlanta)
BGG Con (Dallas)
Pax East (Boston)
Emerald City Con (Seattle)
Steamcon (Bellevue WA)
* note 1 - May not be retail sales at Gary Con 2020 as it's the same weekend as Adepticon

You'd think two cons that close together would try to avoid that.

GaryCon is a high-roller convention celebrating the life and times of Gary Gygax. It is therefore, primarily, a D&D convention.
Adepticon is a mass-market, and fast-growing, miniatures/wargaming convention. The overlap between the two pretty much was the two Catalyst Demo Agents who attended both this year.

Maybe only one company had an overlap, but it's not uncommon for an RPG player to also like miniature games, or vice versa.

Sadly, next year they'll have to pick one or the other. :(
Pax Unplugged (Philly) was also the exact same weekend as Mechcon (Vancouver) last year, with the only overlap of the two events on opposite sides of the continent being Catalyst's participation. :-\
In that case they sent two different teams to the two events.

Yeah, something official needs to be done back in the South.

I was very happy to the CGL at Adepticon this year and hope they continue to have a presence. I didn’t get a chance to chat with the guys but was able to pick some stuff up.
