In that context, an LRM-5 AND an SRM-2 could make sense.

True to all that.

I actually have difficult time raising ire against most 'mechs.  The Assassin just jumped out at me as one I didn't like, and had the virtue of not being mentioned yet.

But it is a fast pos!  I give it that.

I'm surprised that the Jagermech hasn't been mentioned yet.

One time I had to roll for 2 heavies ,a medium, and a light on the RATs.
I had to use the Davion table and thought " COOL! They have a LOT
of my favorite variants"!
I rolled  2 Jagermechs ,a Shadowhawk 2D , and a Locust LCT-1M.

The opposition had almost as much armor on 1 mech as I had on
the whole lance COMBINED.

Nah, his lance was full of trainees or national guard (militia) and his opponents had good intel of where a weak link was most likely!

How many ways can we say "the Assassin sucks"?

"Hey, why don't we add an LRM 5 to the Wasp? We could also slightly increase it's speed and armor. All we'd have to do is double it's tonnage and cost."

While there are mechs I dislike, there aren't any that generate the kind of HATRED for me that Elementals do.

They are insanely dangerous for their BV, and have the best attributes of both mechs and infantry. Wherever there should be a weakness, they get an exception.

Get blasted be a PPC? He survives because he's got 11hp. Damage randomization spreads the damage around so inefficiently that you waste tons of potential damage on overkill while preventing the damage from going where it needs to go (the rest of the squad).

Slow? He can hitch a ride on an insanely FAST mech. And even dismounted, a free 3pt jump is more than generous.

Weak to MGs? NOPE.

Weak to fire? Not unless you have A LOT of it. And Salamanders are completely immune to it.

They take an INSANE amount of effort to kill despite being a significant threat and they are way undercosted for what they bring to the table.

They're pure cheese.

Best time to hit Elementals is right after they dismount, and with Artillery.

Hitting a Point with an LB-10X Cluster shot is a great way to remove one or two armor points from multiple troopers, rendering them vulnerable to 9-10-pt guns.

Elementals are like Mechs, in that IS players have to remember that it's teamwork that makes the Clanner drop.

And if you don't have artillery or other AoE weaponry, inferno SRMs turn them into popcorn.

Ah, but now you're stuck having to bring a SPECIFIC counter to deal with something you don't even know if you'll be facing.

What if you didn't bring any artillery or infernoes?

What if you didn't bring enough infernoes? That SRM-2 isn't going to squeeze damage out fast enough to be useful. Ideally, you want double SRM-6 packs to whittle them down FAST, and now you're talking about having to have very specific mechs to do the job.

What if they brought fireproof Salamanders?

Meanwhile, whatever you send in with SRMs is going to be taking fire from their SRMs too. And they can fire A LOT of SRMs your way.

It's not that there aren't solutions, it's that you have to build your whole lance to be able to take care of them even if you don't know you'll be facing them.

This is bad game design in general, but it's obscene on a cheap filler unit.

'Mech Mortars are also AOE.  And AOE is good against just about everything, so why not bring it?

Not sure how it's bad game design when just about everything that deals with them also hurts mechs and other units. It's not like you're suddenly unable to deal with other units just because you remembered to pack one or two anti-elemental things.

I’ve heard a lot of this recently (in the past couple months) about not being able to deal with infantry or BA.

Sure it might take a Gauss Rifle to kill an Elemental when a couple medium lasers can’t. Sure they’re annoying because theirs five of them to your one mech. Infantry have those bonuses unless you have them in the open or anti-infantry guns.

A lot of designs carry backup AI weapons, a lot of designs can move faster than BA or infantry can without their transports, and a lot of designs have sufficient armor to take a strike or two from one of them when ambushed (to say the least)

Are they annoying? Sure especially to people who have never faced them before.
But They have weaknesses for sure, as ‘powerful’ as they might be

As a great man once said ‘DONT PANIC!’
